Lifeguarding Blended r.24

1. Course Description
The American Red Cross lifeguard training and certification are imperative to the process of getting hired on as an official Red Cross lifeguard. Our detailed training includes both testing of hands-on skills as well as comprehension on written tests. The certification, which includes First Aid, CPR and AED training, is valid for two years upon completion and is accepted nationwide. The American Red Cross is the most respected source for training and certification of this kind.
This option is for those training for the first time or for those whose certifications have expired. This course is available in traditional, in-person course format (27 hours, 25 minutes) and the Blended Learning course format (21.5 hours in person, 6.5 hours online). The prerequisites for this course include being 15 years of age and having passed the 2 pre-course swimming skills test.
This is a blended learning course including an online portion and an instructor-led classroom skill session. This is a non-refundable course.
2. Prerequisites
- Minimum age: 15 years
- Must be able to pass a lifeguarding class prerequisite swim test which is as follows:
1. Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence
- Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.
- Swim goggles are allowed.
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
2. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds
- Starting in the water, swimming 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, exit the water without using steps or a ladder.

Course Description :
The purpose of the American Red Cross r. 24 Lifeguarding instructor and Lifeguarding instructor trainer online update courses are to provide instructors and instructor trainers with an updated certification and essential knowledge about:
- The updated r.24 American Red Cross Lifeguarding program and program materials.
- Teaching strategies and techniques used when teaching courses and modules in the lifeguarding program.
- A summary of key changes to the Lifeguarding basic-level courses.
All current American Red Cross Lifeguarding instructors and instructor trainers must successfully complete an r.24 update, earning an r.24 Lifeguarding instructor or instructor trainer certification, to teach the r.24 Lifeguarding program courses.
Note: Expired Lifeguarding instructors or instructor trainers, expired by no more than 1 year, that do not qualify to take the online update, may take a Limited-Edition Lifeguarding Instructor or Instructor Trainer Recertification course (only available through December 31, 2024). This course is blended learning and will include the r.24 online update course. This course provides a path for expired instructors and trainers to update and recertify. Those Lifeguarding instructors or instructor trainers that do not update to the r.24 Lifeguarding program within the required deadlines may re-enter by taking one of the following courses:
- r.24 Lifeguarding Instructor Crossover/Re-entry course (only if expired no more than 2 years)
- r.24 Lifeguarding Instructor course
- r.24 Lifeguarding Instructor Trainer Academy (for LGIs that meet the IT Academy qualifications).
Prerequisites for LGi/T Review:
- Possess one of the following current American Red Cross certifications:
- Lifeguarding Instructor
- Obtain and review r.24 Lifeguarding program course materials. Be able to provide proof
Online Course

Water Safety Instructor BL
This is a non refundable course
Course Description
The Water Safety Instructor, also known as WSI™, course trains instructor candidates to teach all of the courses presented in the Swimming and Water Safety program to all age groups; all of the courses listed above, plus Learn-to-Swim Levels 4-6 and Adult Swim. This certification is the gold standard and provides the most comprehensive training for swim instructors.
Pre-requisite skills
To participate in the Water Safety Instructor course, individuals must:
Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled lesson of this course.
Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:
1. Swim the following strokes consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4 (see Appendix B)
Front crawl-25 yards

- Be at least 16 years of age by the end of training
- Pass swim skills evaluation: Candidates must demonstrate and proficiently complete 25 yards of the following strokes: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, and butterfly
- Maintain back float for 1 minute
- Maintain treading water for 1 minute
